What Does Travel Insurance Cover?

Let’s start with the most basic kinds of travel insurance coverage: Typically, travel insurance policies usually will be offering 2 primary types of coverage: medical coverage, and trip cancellation / trip interruption insurance. Trip cancellation coverage means you’ll be reimbursed for nonrefundable payments or deposits if it turns out that you can’t go on the trip and have to cancel your travel plans. Trip interruption insurance will reimburse you for the unused portion of your vacation if you can’t complete the trip, and in some cases even the cost of purchasing a ticket to get back home. Medical coverage typically covers the costs of your medical care and evacuation services if you need to be transported somewhere to receive medical care and treatment. Many people also want AD&D (accidental death and dismemberment) coverage – even though statistically speaking, air travel is quite safe, it’s natural for people to worry about being involved in a plane crash.

I Already Have Health Insurance, Won’t That Cover Me When I’m Traveling Too?

Very good question – the short (and true) answer is maybe. You’ll want to check with your existing insurance company and ask if your current health insurance policy is going to cover you on the trip you have planned or you’re planning. You’ll also want to ask if your health insurance plan can be accepted for payment in the country or countries to which you plan to travel.  Also ask if you’ll have to pay out of pocket first for any required medical care, and then be reimbursed afterward. A major benefit of travel medical insurance is the fact that you typically will not pay up front and then have to hassle and wait for a reimbursement, you’ll be covered and payment will be accepted without you having to reach into your wallet or purse.

How Much Is Travel Insurance Going To Cost Me?

One rule of thumb often used in the travel insurance industry is to figure that a good, comprehensive travel insurance policy including medical coverage, medical evacuation, and trip-cancellation/interruption insurance will run you between 2 and 7 percent of the price of your trip. The cancellation and/or interruption portion of your coverage should be calculated based on the non-refundable portion(s) of your trip. So, if you can get your airline ticket reissued for a very minor charge then it’s not going to make much sense to buy coverage based on the total ticket price.

What If I Have Some Sort Of Pre-Existing Condition?-Can I Still Get Insurance?-Will I Still Be Covered?

If you do have a pre-existing health problem, you’ll want to review the policy to see if you’re covered for that specific condition. It’s a good idea to investigate this well in advance of your trip – don’t wait until the last minute to look into this.

What Is Emergency Medical Evacuation Coverage? – And, What’s “Repatriation”?

An emergency medical evacuation is where you need to be transported to a place where you can get medical treatment and emergency care. The levels of care can vary, so check the policies you’re considering for their terms and conditions. Medical repatriation insurance is having the costs of being sent back to your home country covered by the policy.

What About Sports Or “Extreme Sports” Coverage?

You may be involved in extreme sports, or perhaps you’re just your average, fun-loving adventure seeker that likes to have a good time while on holiday or vacation. If you’re planning on going skiiing, snowboarding, surfing, rock climing, water skiiing, mountain climbing – even sailing – you should look into the policy you’re considering for details on exclusions for those “risky” activities. Keep in mind that you may wish to get additional coverage specifically for such things as sports-related travel including scuba diving, parasailing, backpacking, and so on.

Will My Policy Cover The Cost If I Have To Cancel My Trip? What If My Trip Is Interrupted?

If you can’t make your trip and have to cancel, most airlines won’t reimburse you. Trip cancellation insurance means you’ll be reimbursed for those costs – in most instances. Coverage often depends on the specific reason you have to cancel such as death, illness, death or illness of a family member, and business reasons such as rescheduled meetings, ill partners, layoff from a full time job, etc. Trip cancellation and interruption coverage is not alway for “just any reason” like you changed your mind and don’t want to go, but you’ll simply want to read the terms and conditions for particulars.
